BY THE LIGHT OF LANTERNS (Dir. Hiromasa Konishi)

Among the residents and visitors of the Monterey Bay area, very few know of the vivid and multicultural history that has shaped the region. The story of the Chinese who pioneered commercial fishing and who made enormous contributions to the economy of the Monterey Bay in the last 1800"s and early 1900's is largely unknown and untold.

Geraldine Low Sabado, who is a direct descendant of the first Chinese fishermen, is one of the few left in the area who has a tie to these early immigrants. Now she is on a mission to learn about and make others aware of the amazing contributions her family and other Chinese made in shaping the Monterey Bay Area.

SERIOUS RADIO (Dir. Pete Liebengood)

Filmed in Malawi, Africa and in Northern California, "Serious Radio" is the inspirational story of a young Malawian's one-man campaign to halt the spread of HIV/AIDS in his country. Bayana Chunga produces and hosts a weekly half-hour program on the government radio station. Ironically, his only funding for his productions come from individuals in the Northern California town of Redwood City. Mr. Chunga has committed his life to uplifting a nation, all by himself.
