MEET THE MAVERICK - EDWARD JAMES OLMOS

Edward James Olmos's arrival into the performing arts was launched by his extraordinary role as "El Pachuco" in Zoot Suit. For his portrayal, Mr. Olmos won a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, a Theatre World Award, and a nomination for a Tony Award®. Mr. Olmos's other career triumphs include playing "Gaff" in Blade Runner and "Lieutenant Martin Castillo" in the popular television series, Miami Vice, for which he was awarded an Emmy®. His role as "Jaime A. Escalante" in Stand and Deliver earned him an Academy Award® nomination. In 1994, he won the Golden Globe Award® for his role in The Burning Season. Currently, Mr. Olmos stars as "Commander Adama" in the Sci-Fi Channel's hit, Battle Star Galactica. Throughout his career, Mr. Olmos has continued to excel not only in his work in the performing arts but also with his humanitarian efforts. For his efforts, he has won countless humanitarian awards that include Harvard's Multi-Cultural Award. In 1992, he was honored with the John Anson Ford Award from the Los Angeles Commission on Human Relations for his efforts after the 1992 L.A. riot.

Filmmaker Bio

David Chai is an Animation Instructor at San Jose State University and an Animation Director with Thunderbean Animation. Accused of crimes he didn't commit, David fled to the wilderness to escape prosecution from the law, where he lives peacefully animating with grizzly bears and raccoons, hoping to one day clear his name so he can return to society and get to sit next to Scarlett Johansson at the Academy Awards.

RADIO GRITO (Dir. Mike Seely)

In the tradition of Cesar Chavez and farm labor organizing, Radio Grito is a small Spanish language radio show for migrant workers and their families in California's San Joaquin valley. This film illustrates the empowerment, independence, and education that a grassroots radio project can provide for a community in need. Filmmaker Bio

Before working in film, Mike Seely worked as a wildlife biologist, journalist, deejay, and sound recordist in New York, Seattle, and the Bay Area. His other works include; Radio Takeover (video i, season 11), recounting the FCC shutdown of San Francisco Liberation Radio and Nature's Blueprints, a film about the work and ideas of Eugene Tsui, an eccentric architect who bases his designs on biological forms. Mike completed his MA in documentary film production at Stanford University in 2005. He is currently working in San Francisco as a freelance cinematographer, and as an associate producer on a series of films about bioethics for the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics.

In this segment we feature film clips and interviews with Director Luanne Beck and Producer Kim Clark. God & Gays: Bridging the Gap explores the struggle that Christians have reconciling sexuality and spirituality. We get into the head, heart and lives of the people who have found this issue in this culture at this time as their self-defining work. Filmmaker Bios

Director: Luane Beck grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she resides today, near Santa Cruz. She shares her passion for filmmaking as a professor at San Jose State University (SJSU). Luane Beck was Recently named a "filmmaker to watch," by Curve magazine. Prior, she was a professional actor for over seventeen years before turning her creative talents to directing and screenwriting.

Producer: Kim Clark worked as a Line and Associate Producer for nine documentaries, including award winning Preemies: Fight for Life and Coast Guard: Survivors airing on the Discovery Channel, Travel Channel and Discovery Health Channel. She worked as an assistant producer for KTEH. Clark wrote, produced, and directed the documentary Shouting at a Loud Party: The Contemporary Christian Music Industry, a look at the potential social change created by music. She has also produced a Short film, 6/16 for film festivals. She teaches media studies and production at SJSU.
