Technical Volunteer Opportunities at KTEH

There are a variety of technical volunteer positions available. No prior technical experience is required which makes it easy for anyone to get involved. People from all facets of the community ranging from students, hobbyists, and retirees have participated in this program. Joining the KTEH Technical Volunteer Program is a great way to support your local public television station while also learning what goes on behind the scenes of a TV station.

Listed below are descriptions of the technical positions available to the KTEH technical volunteer:

Camera

The Camera operator works in the studio and operates the studio camera. He/she prepares the camera shots that the Director cues. The level of preparation for this position is low.

Server

The Server operator works in the production control room. He/she prepares and plays the stored video clips that the Director cues. The level of preparation for this position is low.

Teleprompter

The teleprompter operator runs the teleprompter and scrolls the script for the talent to read on air. He/she will work closely with the talent to adjust scrolling speeds. The level of preparation for this position is moderate.

Video Shader

The Video Shader sits at the Camera Control Unit (CCU) console in the production control room. The "Shader" will manipulate the iris and the black level settings on the CCUÕs to makes sure all cameras have proper exposure before going to air. The level of preparation is moderate.

Audio

The Audio engineer monitors the audio signal that goes out to air. He/she is required to mix the following audio sources - microphones, CD music, & server audio. He/she is also responsible for testing and preparing the audio equipment prior to air. The level of preparation for this position is moderate.

Character Generator Operator

The Character Generator Operator, or CG, works in the Control Room. He/she prepares and plays the gift and thank you stills that the Director cues. One has to be able to work fast in a live stressful TV environment to be the CG op. The level of preparation for this position is high.

Technical Director

The Technical Director, or TD, sits in the production control room next to the Director. The TD is responsible for switching between video sources on the Director's command. The level of preparation is high for this position.

Floor Director

The Floor Director works in the studio, and relays cues and information between the Director and the talent. Information is communicated verbally, through cue cards, and/or with hand signals. The Floor Director also assists the camera operators and maintains control on the studio floor. The level of preparation for this position is high.

Training for all of these technical positions is provided prior to and during pledge drives or special events.
